Summer Vocal Arts Program
at the Brooklyn Music School
The BMS Summer Vocal Arts Program (SVA) provides a selective, five-week intensive exposure to high-level vocal arts preparation and performance.
Designed to accommodate both highly promising student performers and accomplished adults, the SVA culminates in three fully produced shows: an opera, a cabaret, and a children's vocal production, that will be presented to the Brooklyn community as a showcase for BMS talent.
Each week of this accelerated course will include approximately 12 hours of classes in singing, performance, acting, and yoga for singers that will be integrated with rehearsal.
Students will have the opportunity to improve their vocal technique, diction, acting, movement and stage presence while learning material from a range of musical traditions.
In 2018, the SVA program presented John Blow's baroque masterpiece "Venus and Adonis" and Christopher Cerrone's one-act "All Wounds Bleed". As well as the annual edition of "A Brooklyn Cabaret” directed by Peter Szep.

Details about Performances:
Bastien und Bastienne
Young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s charming opera Bastien und Bastienne brings to life a tale of two lovers who are trying to reconcile. True love, loyalty and trust are at the heart of the story and a well-meaning magician who finally brings them together. Composed by Mozart when he was only 12 years old, the narrative of the piece highlights the characters inner emotional struggles, while the music keeps this classical gem “light” and accessible.
In the second half of the program, students will showcase fully staged scenes from Mozart’s later masterpieces potentially: Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni and The Magic Flute.
Performances will be accompanied by a chamber ensemble and will showcase elegant period costumes by Deborah Wright Houston.
