Joshua Hunton

Violin, Viola

Joshua Hunton is a New York-based violist, whose performance experience spans opera, ballet, musical theatre, chamber, and symphonic repertory. His work also extends to commercial recording, contemporary dance collaboration, and new music premieres. As an active freelancer, member of the Arya String Quartet, and principal violist of the Regina Opera Company, he has performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, National Sawdust, Symphony Space, and other venues.

Versed in the pedagogies of Paul Rolland, Shinichi Suzuki, Karen Tuttle, and Mimi Zweig, Mr. Hunton serves as a teaching artist with the Harmony Program, Music Beans, Noel Pointer Foundation, and Brooklyn Music School. He has also been on faculty at Turtle Bay Music School and held a position as Adjunct Instructor at New York University’s Steinhardt School. Having worked with a diverse range of students and various El Sistema-inspired programs, his philosophy as a music educator is driven by a determination to bring a love for music and sense of belonging to those in every community. He sees teaching as more than just helping students improve their technique and musical artistry. It is also a means to nurture their development as confident, creative, and persistent individuals, equipping them with important skills they will carry into their daily lives.

Mr. Hunton received his B.M. in Viola Performance from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, and his M.M. in Viola Performance and Advanced Certificate in Music Education from NYU Steinhardt. His teachers have included Stephanie Baer, Ronald Carbone, Stephen Wyrczynski, Masumi Rostad, Luis Vargas, and Peter Slowik.
